Pareto Optimality는 신고전주의 경제학에서 게임이론, 공학, 사회과학에 걸친 폭넓은 응용분야를 가지고 있는 매우 중요한 개념이다. Pareto Optimality를 설명하기 위해 먼저 Pareto Improvement에 대해서 알아야한다. Pareto Improvement란, 주어진 자원을 분배할 때 다른 모든 개체들의 손해 없이 최소한 한 개체가 이익을 볼 수 있는 자원 재분배 과정을 말한다.

Pareto Optimal은 더이상 Pareto Improvement가 일어날 수 없는 자원 분배 상태를 일컫는다.
